I see myself as a multidisciplinary artist. Trained in science and with a 40-year(+) career in research in teaching, I bring my perspective on nature and the world to life through artistic expression. I have given invited talks on the unity of art and science to professional groups across the country. I believe that to be successful in science one must think creatively, otherwise you are doomed to repeating the work of others and there is no progress. A successful artist must have some understanding of the science behind their medium. Without that basic technical understanding it is impossible to master the medium and achieve the desired results.
I work with many different media. Often they overlap in interesting ways.
For art jewelry I use metals (silver, copper, bronze) as well as lampworked glass and kiln-fired enamels.
Photography brings in cameras, microscopes and occasionally the electron microscope.
My imagination is fired by the images that I see when using microscopes and photographic equipment. These often translate to 3-dimensional art objects in my studio.
